Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue is a traditional table massage that utilizes techniques including trigger point, myofascial release, Thai, and shiatsu. Cupping or gua sha may be incorporated when needed or requested. Lotion or oil is used, and it is a more therapeutic-based massage than Swedish/relaxation. We will find tender spots and work to improve them. If you would like a more relaxation-based massage, please inform me beforehand.

*Cupping and Gua Sha are completely optional and no extra charge. Cupping decompresses any “stuck” areas by pulling fascial adhesions and tight muscles toward the surface, giving the opposite effect of most massage techniques. Cups may also be used actively by gliding across the body, which is a quick way to warm up tissue and to assess the quality of the tissue and indicate where tension lies. It can sometimes feel itchy as it breaks up fascial adhesions.

Cupping can leave petechiae (also called “sha”), which is the coloration you have probably seen people with. This is NOT bruising, this is blood that has been stagnant within the tissues and we are releasing it for the body to reabsorb. In Chinese medicine, this is thought to be the release of “Qi” or energy stagnation and the degree of color can signify different issues.

Gua Sha (which translates into scraping sand) is a similar effect to cupping (without the decompression), but more aggressive and effective at breaking up deeply stagnant Qi/ adhesions. A flat ceramic tool is used and more regularly leaves petechiae. You may also notice that the “sand” quality quickly dissipates with each stroke as we break up adhesions. Treat any Sha (petechiae) like a sunburn for the first couple of days since the skin barrier has been compromised. Contraindicated for anyone on blood thinners or pregnant women.

**30 minute appointments are only available for deep tissue treatments. This length is great for focused work if you don’t have much time or a great option for children under the age of 16.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is available for 60, 75, or 90 minute appointments. This is performed on the table in the same fashion of deep tissue. We will utilize bolstering, side lying positions, and lighter, relaxing work. No cupping or gua sha will be performed.

Motor Vehicle Accident

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) available for those who were in an auto accident and have an open claim. A doctor’s prescription is recommended to provide to insurance (need a doctor’s referral? See my husband Dr. Joe Haugh). The initial appointment is longer to allow time for paperwork and intake. While we hope insurance covers what they say they will, ultimately the client is responsible for any charges not paid to the therapist by insurance and by signing up, you acknowledge and accept the responsibility. MVA out-of-pocket is $150 per appointment.
